Recent Game Releases and Reviews

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/click_online/8371365.stm

The link to the video above is about how the new released, big hit, games are being viewed by its fans and critics. I personally think that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 looks like the most interesting game on the market right now. Unfortunately i have not played it yet but just from watching the trailers and reading up on comments about the game it seems like it is worth every cent.

Microsoft NEW Technology Microsoft Surface

In this video you can see what the new line of technology is coming out with. Who would have thought that in just a few years we would have something so different from what we are used to? The Microsoft surface is the new revolutionary computer that is hands on, no need to have the old fashion keyboard or a mouse, its time to let our fingers glide through the board and let our imaginations do the work. This video was made in 2007 and we are in 2009. Does this say something to you? How long is it going to take for it to come out? As you can see in the video it is a multi-touch surface that responds to hand gestures that the body does or makes. The multi-touch boards have been around for a while now, in bars, clubs and even restaurants but now is the time to take it to a next level, homes.

The multi-touch Microsoft Surface is probably going to be one of Microsoft's biggest sales of the century. It seems to be that once this product is out on the market it might sale because the cost ranges from $5,000-$10,000, and most people complain that regular computers cost too much, so after a few months the price will lower and people will start buying more. The good thing about this surface board is that even thought it has been mentioned to be coming out in the near future, the screen screen will be 30 inch's, not only is the screen big but it can be used for people that do not have good eye-sight. It seems to be that Microsoft is trying to make the tech world similar to the movie Minority Report. Also, there is a product which is almost exact to the Surface board which is the Apple Iphone, that does not allow you to do everything the Surface board does but some of them.

Gaming Takes a Whole New Level

On June 1st, 2009 Microsoft introduced Project Natal during the E3 2009. Project Natal is a new Xbox console that will make games at home become an interactive experience beyond the control.

Using motion sensors to pick up body movements by the user it provides what would be live entertainment for the person playing a particular game. Other systems like RGB Camaras (RGB is acronym for Red, Blue, Green), motion capture, facial and voice recognition, allows the game to not only be customizable for each user but also makes it more varied and user friendly.

I think that Microsoft staff are geniuses for taking this next step in the stationary console world. I believe that this new interactive game will provide gamers a more active day just by playing a fighting or sports game because in order to play and succeed you must move around and interact. I would definitely buy this because when consoles like the Wii came out I found it interesting the whole interaction with the remotes but i did not feel that it was sufficient interaction, especially with games that involved jumping or other movements that the remote would have trouble with.

What benefits would this type of hardware bring to the home of the user in comparison to other consoles? Would you buy it? Why or why not?

Internet Addiction: A Growing Threat

http://www.medpagetoday.com/Psychiatry/Addictions/16291

Now that the internet is accessible in most places around the world, which is great it also comes with internet addiction. In my opinion Internet addiction is a new type of drug. It’s funny to think that the internet can be consider a drug because we are not shooting or smoking it but rather just sitting down and using it. It is sad to see that a creation so powerful that makes our life so much easier can harm us just by using it too much. Different types of disorders such as “attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)” or depression and social phobia is also predicted that the personal is predicted of internet addiction.

Medpagetoday an online magazine website shows the downside to internet addiction in the youth population. Throughout the article the researchers from National Science Council of Taiwan studied different symptoms of the internet addiction and the percentage of disorders that have come from it. In order to get the data the researchers took 2,293 students from 10 local Taiwanese schools in September 2005. Questionnaires we filled out every six, 12 and 24 months. The results came back as 10.8% of the seventh graders could be classified as having internet addiction.

It was almost impossible to save all of the people that are having problems with internet addiction but trying will help many. Do you think that in areas where internet addiction has a higher percentage should have a monitor on usage time or address people in a certain manner?

Pros and Cons of Online Education

http://www.progressiveu.org/202304-cyber-education-the-good-the-bad-and-the-totally-outrageous

What this article talks about as the title says “CYBER EDUCATION, the good the bad and the totally outrageous.” Throughout the article the writer mostly talks about should we have most of our education done online and stop traditional education. He points out different aspects of why we should not change the learning system because different problems would lead from it. For example, " ‘People are not realizing that addiction to the Internet can wreak as much havoc in people’s lives as alcohol, drugs, and gambling’." There are people out in the world that try to help the online addicted people and if we change our learning system more people will become addicted. It is true what the writer says, “millions log on, but can’t log off”, this is true because since using computers is so common nowadays people do not know when to stop and log off.

In my own opinion the learning system is fine how it is; going to school is the best form of learning because if changed to online, people are giving more freedom which can lead to not doing their homework, failing classes, etc. When I think of online schooling I think of it as people that have jobs and do not have time to attend actual classes, and this is where online schooling is convenient because most of the time you are in charge of your work and hours. Now that technology is growing faster than we can imagine, sooner or later classes will end up all online and problems will occur when trying to communicate with society. What should happen in terms of education, keep the traditional education or move to online education?

Education and Video Games Walk Hand in Hand

Cesar:
As graphics and quality of game technology increases so can thelevel of education on kids and teenagers that play these games. Educational researchers have a growing concern that students that play video games ar not using their skills properly and in the right way. They believe that there is a way that student that are able to play video games with such dexterity could focus those abilities in academic way yet, still in the virtual world.

In Edutopia, a tech magazine and website, there is an article called Serious Gaming by Richard Rapaport in which it mentiones educational researchers are working together with game manufacturers in order to create what they call "serious games". These type of game would be ones that will aloow the assesment of data, see the achievment of the individuals, and at the same time estimulate the mind with academics topics. Despite this idea already being used in some schools the ability of gathering live data from these games is new. One example of how a "serious game" would be the River City Project. What this game is basically give a student a virtual world in which (nineteenth century) and this particular city has an epidemic that is undiagnosed. Another example of a probaly more common game is Brain Age, which is the Nintendo DS game that challenges the mind in different dificulties. This type of game stimulates the mind and keeps it active. Therefore being consider a "healthy"game.

I personally found interesting the River City Project and would honestly like to give it a shot some day. The whole idea of bringing in games into academics is something i find very intersting because they chose something that todays current youth has a strong grasp on, especially new generations. Also technology is entering all aspects of our daily life, so the fact that educational researchers and gaming communities are comming together to form something that would bring best of both worlds is something that will definately make a difference.

Here are som Videos you can watch:
http://muve.gse.harvard.edu/rivercityproject/view/rc_videos.html

Judging by the attemps of educational boards effort to try and bring games into classrooms for educational purposes, In your opinion how much success do you think that these "serious games" will have if launched world wide, in a 5 year term for example and why. Also how much do you personally agree with playing a video game in the classroom instead of using the traditional pencil and paper?

Online Gaming and it's Consequences

Many people world wide now possess, or have access to, a computer or their own personal notebook (laptop) which have access to the internet. What they probably don't know is the impact that these have on our current day society. With the internet being more accesible to people, not just to surf the web, but also to play online games, addiction to things online has increased rapidly in the past few years. The demand of everything being instant which the internet provides for most things such as information, media entertainment, shopping, and many more have caused many people to become obsessed with them.

Online gaming addiction is an issue that has grown so much in the recent years that in some places in the world they have rehab centers for people who are addicted. These particular games are usually Massive Multi Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) such as EverQuest, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and so on. At first, children and teenagers where the one most commonly affected since these games were mainly targeted to entertain that demographic. With new graphics and technology catching the attendtion of older players, cases of adult addiction have been increasing since they engage in the addicting fantasy virtual worlds these games provide.

As a gamer myself, to an extent, I wanted to know peoples opinion on Online gaming overall, like what you personally think about online games, if you play them or not, and if you play or would start to play, how addicted would you find yourself in a scale of 1-10 (10 being complete addict) and why.
Also how would this affect not only your life but people around you.

http://www.netaddiction.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=61&Itemid=84

Well, like i mentioned since I am a gamer, i believe that the amount of addiction is based on how much you allow it to engulf your life. I would rate myself as a 8 flat. During weekends or holidays when nothing is happening i could spend hours playing online games without realizing how much time I have actually spent. Despite me being like this, i have noticed that it has barely, if not at all, affected my personal or social life. Also even though im what you could consider a hard core gamer, in some occasion, I have never put an online game over any other aspect of my life. So when it gets down to it is one who decides what to prioritize in their life
