Online Gaming and it's Consequences

Many people world wide now possess, or have access to, a computer or their own personal notebook (laptop) which have access to the internet. What they probably don't know is the impact that these have on our current day society. With the internet being more accesible to people, not just to surf the web, but also to play online games, addiction to things online has increased rapidly in the past few years. The demand of everything being instant which the internet provides for most things such as information, media entertainment, shopping, and many more have caused many people to become obsessed with them.

Online gaming addiction is an issue that has grown so much in the recent years that in some places in the world they have rehab centers for people who are addicted. These particular games are usually Massive Multi Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) such as EverQuest, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and so on. At first, children and teenagers where the one most commonly affected since these games were mainly targeted to entertain that demographic. With new graphics and technology catching the attendtion of older players, cases of adult addiction have been increasing since they engage in the addicting fantasy virtual worlds these games provide.

As a gamer myself, to an extent, I wanted to know peoples opinion on Online gaming overall, like what you personally think about online games, if you play them or not, and if you play or would start to play, how addicted would you find yourself in a scale of 1-10 (10 being complete addict) and why.
Also how would this affect not only your life but people around you.

Well, like i mentioned since I am a gamer, i believe that the amount of addiction is based on how much you allow it to engulf your life. I would rate myself as a 8 flat. During weekends or holidays when nothing is happening i could spend hours playing online games without realizing how much time I have actually spent. Despite me being like this, i have noticed that it has barely, if not at all, affected my personal or social life. Also even though im what you could consider a hard core gamer, in some occasion, I have never put an online game over any other aspect of my life. So when it gets down to it is one who decides what to prioritize in their life

  1. In my opinion, Cesar, I would probably rate myself as 5 or 6 during school time, and during the holidays/vacation, I rate myself in between 8 and 9. For some reason, I stop being an internet addicted person because of my routine and of who I am. As I see people around me, for example my brother, he is really into his room. He doesn't want to mix with other societies. When he has his laptop, he opens it and use it over his spare time.

  2. Although I am not a serious gamer, I do enjoy playing game from time to time.So I would give myself a score of 4~5. I do not really know how it is for the lives of addicted gamers. But coming from a culture where game addiction is common, I have several friends who are game addicts and therefore I am clearly able to see the effect that it has on the individual. One of the major effects of game addiction is obviously a decrease of social life. Because a person gets more involved and interested in playing games rather than spending time with their friends, as time passes they lose contacts with their close ones and they tend to create a barrier between them and the real world. This can also mean a decrease in academic skills since they'd rather play games than going to school and study. Another major problem with gaming addiction is death. Addicts do not know how to stop themselves from playing games, so they continue playing for 3 consecutive days without sleeping. Then the body can't support the physical stress and it shuts down automatically which can lead to death.

  3. We believe that gamming addiction has become a serioues problem in our society because as the games improve their quality and entertainment more users are attracted and people's social skills decrease. Many high school students become son involve that they end up scarifying their academics to play video games. On the other hand some of this video games are violent, which opens people mind to new ways of being violent, were users feel pressured to act as the character of the game. As a solution we believe that schools should create a educational campaign to teach students how to use their games and time in a proper way. Also they should encourage students to play educational video games and relate those games to school activities.

  4. I would rate myself about 3.
I barely play video game, unless if i find like a great game, i can get into the game for hours in a day, but normally i barely play games, like 2,3 hours only on weekend.
And i do have some people that are addicted to video games but none of them seem to have social problems; they do hang out with friends, have good grades, etc...

  5. I agree with Paola and Chong on some of the things they mentioned such as there are some people who sacrifice academics and social life for a video game, therefore making it difficult for them to even try to create a social life since they have never "practiced" those skills. Yet there are gamers who manage to to create a balance between their social and gaming life.

I also have to disagree with the educational campaign idea suggested by Paola for very simple reason that will immediately stand out if such campaign against violent or non-educational games is launched. These reasons would be the amount of people that would be involved would mainly be parents, or other non-gaming people in the community, gamers or just people who like action, or violent video games will most likely not stop playing over a educational movement, and most gamers, at least the ones i have met, would never choose an educational game over an MMORPG.

  6. I agree with Cesar, but I also believe that the issue with online gaming is that teenagers get too addicted with video games that they don’t concentrate on their academic work and they start failing. Also with the excessive use of these games, they start to get violent and maybe they later want to relive these games in violent ways. Also relating to online games, it can distract you and even make you become unsocial.

  7. In my opinion online gaming is not that bad, the only basic difference to modern gaming like Playstation 3 or Xbox is the accessibility. Furthermore, people may access online games easier than having to purchase the expensive game consoles and games. The damage here will only depend on the type of games that is played and the amount of time spent on it. There are parental controls available for those matters.

  8. leonchi, if you make gaming more accesible to society people would tend to loose their social skills and they will be completely isolated as every day technology improves this games and they tend to look as real as life, so people would stop living their lifes, to live a life where they can choose and have more control of what they want, but is that the concept of life? i dont think so.
